William James (1842–1910) provided what many regard as an attractive alternative to Clifford’s conception of the ethics of belief. James pointed out that we have two aims when it comes to belief: not only do we want to avoid error, we also want to obtain the truth. Clifford focused on the first of these aims, and overlooked our interest in acquiring true beliefs. James compares Clifford’s attitude to that of a general who keeps his soldiers out of battle rather than risk a single wound.
